Preferred Vendor Spotlight: FineLine Floral

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Meg Steen of FineLine Floral. She is a great florist, and also a lot of fun to work with. She has a unique background that gives her a very cool and unique perspective in the floral world. I recently worked on her commercial video for her business.

The interview can be read below:

Brian: What got you interested in the wedding industry?

Meg: I first got into weddings in 2011 when my little sister got married in Iowa and asked me for advice on flowers. I started looking into how to do bouquets and centerpieces and thought “This looks so fun, I can totally do this.”

Brian: How did you start in the wedding industry?

Meg: In 2014, I started taking on real, paying weddings when several girls on my volleyball team got engaged and needed floral for their weddings. It was so awesome that my first few weddings were for friends and really meant a lot to me. I got to be there for the entire event and see the florals “in full swing”.

Brian: What is your background and style in floral?

Meg: My background is horticulture. In fact, FineLine Floral started in 2011 as my landscape design company. I’ve been blessed with enough growth to hire other designers for that side of the business to allow me time to develop the wedding floral branch as well. My gardening experience helps me chose flowers that are in season and reasonably priced, as well as naturally gorgeous and sometimes locally grown. I harvest a lot of flowers, foliage and berries from my own garden, which I think adds a really unique look to my arrangements. My work tends to range from elegant traditional to a more rustic, vintage, natural garden style.

Brian: How far reaching is FineLine Floral?

Meg: At this point, I serve the Kansas City Metro market exclusively. I prefer to stay within an hours radius of Lees Summit, where my home office and flower shop are located.

Brian: Have you been able to anything really unique for couples since you started doing wedding floral?

Meg: I once worked with a couple who had been high school sweethearts. The bride showed me their pictures from senior prom and I incorporated some of the same flowers from their corsage and boutonnieres into the wedding flowers. It was really special to them. That same bride recently called me to have me do the centerpieces for her baby shower. It was so amazing to see their sweet little family grow again.

Brian: How can people reach you?

Meg: Email is a great way to get a hold of me. meg@finelinefloral.com. I also have a ton of information about myself, my process, my portfolio, my prices online at www.FineLineFloral.com

Brian: Any pro-tips for couples thinking about floral for their wedding?

Meg: It’s always best to work with flowers that are in season at the time of your wedding. This not only saves you a lot of money but it’s also so much better on the environment to buy local blooms instead of having things shipped from over seas. I can order peonies from Alaska for an August wedding but it’s so expensive to have them shipped from that far and they are in high demand, so each stem is nearly twice to three times the regular in season price.

Brian: Any final thoughts?

Meg: Floral and decor usually ranges from 10-20% of a wedding budget. I would venture to guess most full service weddings (which includes delivery, install, and clean up) in the KC area are in the $2,000 to $5,000 range but I also offer a “pick up service” for those brides just needing personal flowers and a few other pieces. Those range from $750 to $1,500 and the bride comes to my shop to pick up from me. If any one has any questions about determining a spending range for their florals, shoot me and email and we can chat!
